“We are of course a nation of differences. Those differences don’t make us weak. They’re the source of our strength.” – Jimmy Carter
I moved out of the comforts of my cocoon to pursue higher studies in “Bengaluru”, also known as “Silicon Valley”. I felt privileged to explore the diversity of my own country which I knew only through textbooks. Having come from the Northern part of India, everything seemed so different and interesting as I coped up with my peers.
The first day of my college was so interesting and it provided me a space to get along with new people, the environment and different Indian languages. I’m fortunate enough to be a student which gave me access to experience different phases of my life, whereas I would have never got this opportunity If I was a professional or into any sort of job. This is the only time where parents give pocket money and encourage their children to get exposure to shape their career, isn’t it?
Heterogeneity brings in new culture, ideas, customs and different experiences from which people can learn from each other.
Diversity in college campus improves the following aspects of any individual:
- Intellectual Engagement
- Self-motivation
- Citizenship
- Cultural Engagement
- Academic skills: Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
- Paving the path to become a better scholar, thinker and citizen.
Every child who prepares himself/herself to frame their future has to break the ice. Leaving the acquaintances will lead to homesickness and I had it too, but gradually everybody comes out of that. The reason for having the guts to break the barrier is to embrace the career.
Ultimately, I learnt that it’s me who has to take the stand for myself. As time passed by, I became stronger and found family in my friends. Therefore, I wanted my career to flourish and this made me conquer all my fears and battles.
The person behind the move is my mother, who marched shoulder to shoulder to achieve my dream. I’m obliged to have such a personality who could direct me in every walk of my life.
